Welcome to the Mintel Reports database tutorial. In this tutorial you will learn how to use Mintel to find market research reports, including those with information on consumers.

Accessing Mintel

Are you on campus right now? If so, you should already be able to see the opening screen for Mintel.

If you're off campus, you may see a screen asking for your Butler ID and password. If so, enter this information now to access Mintel.

If needed, you can resize or move the tutorial box on the left to see the website on the right.

From the opening screen you have various options for searching for information.  For example, you can type keywords in the search box or browse using the menu headings.

Mintel analysts update reports on a regular basis, and one way to find the latest information is to use the Schedule to bring up a calendar of reports.  Let's try that now by clicking on the Schedule heading found above the search box on the opening screen to the right.

Now click on "USA" found under the Select Group box.  You should see a box to "Select Subscription." Clicking on one of the topics or industry sectors listed in the Subscription box will open a calendar of reports.

Which is not covered in the Subscriptions?

3 of 3Let's assume you are researching the Food industry.  Click now on the Food heading to bring up a calendar with release dates for various reports related to food. The calendar for the most recent year shows first, and you can see titles of both published and upcoming reports.

Reports are available for previous years, and you can get to those by clicking on the icon at the top of the calendar.  This is especially useful if you are interested in an upcoming report because you can check to see if a similar report was published last year.

Reviewing a Report

You should be looking at the 2019 calendar for this year's current or upcoming reports on Food topics.  Now switch to the 2018 calendar to find and open the "Frozen Snacks" report published in May 2018.

A brief description will appear that looks like the image below.  Click on the yellow "Read More" button at the bottom of the description to get to the report.

You should now be looking at the "landing page" for the report on Frozen Snacks.  This will give you an overview of the report contents and also provide a short bio of the analyst who follows this industry and wrote the report.

Click on the green "table of contents" button found about halfway down the screen to see the various topics covered in the report.  From here you can go to specific sections of the report.

When you close the table of contents, you will see you also have the option to download parts of the report including an Executive Summary, an Infographic, and a Databook.

The Databook is an Excel spreadsheet with detailed information based on a survey of consumers regarding their purchase and consumption of frozen snacks.  The Databook is one of the most important parts of a Mintel report and is extremely helpful for consumer research.

Conclusion

Congratulations on reaching the end of the Mintel tutorial!  At this point you have learned how to access the Mintel database and conduct a search using the Schedule (calendar) of reports.  You have also opened a report and reviewed its sections.

To learn more about Mintel reports, we encourage you to explore the database more on your own.  Try searches on other topics and open sections of the reports, including the Databook, to get a better idea of how useful Mintel can be for your research.
